It’s Lent! It’s Lent!
And cod’s been heaven sent
To roll himself in raiments breaded
To lay upon a bun beheaded

Maybe ordered with a side
Pierogies plain, potatoes fried
The roll is brown, the fish is tanned
The sauce is white, the flavor bland

As plain a Jane you’ve never seen
Nowhere is there a leaf of green
Or hint of spice or tang of flavor
The ketchup’s what I’m left to savor

Served Fridays at your local parish
Wear your sweats or something garish
Join the everlasting throng
In a line that’s endless long

Though frozen boxed from Restaurant Depot
The food is hot but not so cheap-o
Served up on plates of styrofoam
I’d really rather eat at home

Yes, Easter feast is weeks away
But I’ve summoned up the nerve to say:
Despite my hunger now abated
I think the fish fry’s overrated
